In the Native American Church, peyote ceremonies are often used to treat drug and alcohol addiction. And, tellingly, while alcoholism among the Navajo and other Native American tribes is often said to be more than twice the national US average, it tends to be especially low among members of the Native American Church. Whether peyote therefore represents a promising therapy for alcohol addiction is up for debate, but these findings are supported by anecdotal reports as well as studies into the therapeutic benefits of other psychedelics. Indeed, even William “Bill W” Wilson, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, was in favor of psychedelic intervention.

Many accidents are due to practitioner error and negligence, so make sure you ask your practitioner questions to get a sense if they are qualified to serve you. If your practitioner does not conduct a medical screening on you, that’s a red flag to find another one. Do not drink alcohol or do drugs for at least 3 days after your session. Reach out to friends who you know have tried Kambo and see if they have any vetted practitioners that they can recommend. If you don’t know anyone personally, sometimes certain events such as psychedelic conferences or alternative healing events can have the type of people who may have done Kambo. Look for people with the characteristic kambo scars exposed on their arms and legs and consider asking them for a referral. Peyote has also been shown to help people solve problems, access their creativity, be more environmentally conscious, and improve learning. In its original use, the plant medicine was also used to treat a number of ailments, including snake bites, wounds, skin conditions, and general pain. Native to Mexico and the Southwestern US, peyote has long been a focus of Native American and pre-Colombian ceremonial traditions.
Because of this, they appear in many consumer products, as well as in applications such as firefighting foam. For example, they contaminate soil and groundwater in several German counties. In the southwestern town of Rastatt, Germany, PFASs made drinking water unusable in 2019. Studies show measurable concentrations of the substances in blood and breast milk across the European population.
‘Exploiting people’s gullibility’
Next, a practitioner will use a burning stick to create a number of small burns on the skin, resulting in blisters. The blistered skin is then scraped off, and the kambo is applied to the wounds. The first part of the process involves drinking about a liter of water or cassava soup.
They learned their craft in South America or have been trained by the International Association of Kambo Practitioners. Another reason why it’s so important to use an experienced practitioner? There’s at least one known case of a person coating sticks with egg yolk and selling them as kambo. There have been other reports of imported herbal products being contaminated with heavy metals. From the wound, the kambo enters the lymphatic system and bloodstream, where it’s said to race around the body scanning for problems. This usually results in some immediate side effects, especially vomiting. On a collective level, soul loss is so widespread that some believe that it is the root cause of many of the problems plaguing society today.
Whatever your ayahuasca journey brings you, the number one piece of advice to take away from what you read here is – embrace it. Don’t try to force any feeling, don’t fight or judge what you go through. You can always make sense of the experience later and cast your tempered awareness on it then. In general, even where it’s legal to grow San Pedro, peyote, and other mescaline-containing plants, it is illegal to consume them and especially to extract the mescaline.
If we commit ourselves to inertia and make no effort to discover an alternative, then these subtle impressions of our past deeds will have the force of destiny. To those who lack self-trust and self-confidence, destiny cannot be altered. But if destiny were really unalterable, then why bother to do anything in life? It is only because destiny is alterable that swamis, pandits, gurus, priests, astrologers, and palmists are in business. The contents of our mind color our perception of ourselves and others. Now we have little choice but to see ourselves and the world in accordance with these potent impressions from our past deeds.
But this combo can also be uncomfortably intense for some and worsen mental health symptoms for others. If you have a history of mental health conditions, proceed with caution.
